February 26 Sunday at The Beer StoreI decided to bring my empty beer bottles back to The Beer Store on Sunday. Apparently, this is the thing to do on a Sunday around noon. Must be the thing to do after church.
I had a few cases to bring in (when people help you pack/move, you have to give them beer), so I went in to get a cart. All the carts were in use. This is unprecedented. So, I wait for some guy, who is actually using 2 carts for all his empties, to finish unloading his first cart. There are people coming in behind me looking for carts. I have 96 bottles to return myself. I actually have the least number of bottles of anyone who was in the store. And get this. Nobody in there was buying more beer (myself included).
Maybe they all gave it up for Lent and are sick at looking at the evidence of their overindulgence. Speaking of Lent and the whole Easter season, did you know that Easter is always the first Sunday following the first full moon on or after the Vernal Equinox? Now there is some wiggling here because the full moon used is the ecclesiastical new moon and not the astronomical full moon, but they keep more or less (although not always exactly) in step. Anyway, Easter can be no earlier than March 22 and no later than April 25. This year, Easter is on April 7th. And if you're into that kind of thing, you can get the algorithm for computing the date of Easter on this site. January 12 I Had to WonderAt the Superstore tonight, the guy in front of me at the checkout was buying 8 litres of chocolate milk and 4 containers of Quik chocolate syrup. Wonder if he had a severe chocolate craving.
It reminded me that the other day, I let Isaac make his own chocolate milk. It was the absolute darkest chocolate milk I have ever seen in my life. Musta been good.
When I was a kid, I used to make chocolate milk with the Quik powder. I liked putting large quantities of the stuff in and letting it sink to the bottom so when I was done the milk there would be a big glump of sugary chocolate syrup I could eat with my spoon.
If I continue to write about this, I will bring on a severe chocolate craving, so, that's all folks. January 04 SaucyTaking a cue from Serdic, I decided, hey, why not blog about my latest cooking efforts. Tonight I decided to make up a batch of spaghetti sauce. I'm having the kids' dad and his partner over for dinner tomorrow night, and figured I'd make the sauce in advance and then tomorrow I'll just have to boil up the pasta and make a salad. Then I decided since I'm planning on making lasagna for next Saturday's Farewell to Richmond party, I'd go ahead and make up a huge load of sauce and freeze it for next week. Of course, finding space in the freezer is going to be a challenge.
Anyway, here's what I put into it. This makes a huge pot. I figure it'll be good for 2 meals worth of pasta plus a big lasagna. I don't measure anything, really, so go with your own taste for the spices and stuff. about 2 lbs ground beef
1 green pepper
1 red pepper
1 large onion, chopped
4-5 cloves of garlic, minced
a bunch of slice mushrooms (2 cups maybe -- the amount that comes on one of those pre-wrapped trays, less a few I used to make an omelet last night)
1 jar of spaghetti sauce
2 cans (28 oz I think) of crushed tomatoes (I actually think it would be better with tomato sauce or diced tomatoes, but crushed tomatoes is what I had in the pantry and I am making a effort to use stuff up in order not to have to move it next month)
1 package of onion soup mix
sugar (about 2 T I think; this might have only been necessary to cut the tanginess of the crushed tomatoes)
basil
oregano
red pepper flakes
salt and pepper
cinnamon
I chopped and sauted all the vegetables separately in a bit of butter.
Cooked up the ground beef with the onion soup mix in a big pot. Then added the vegetables, basil (I use lots), oregano (lots, but not as much as the basil), red pepper flakes and salt and pepper. Stirred this up and let it cook for a bit. Then added the pasta sauce and crushed tomatoes. Then I tasted it and deemed it to need sugar and more basil, oregano and red pepper flakes, so in went that. And then just a tiny little bit of cinnamon. Heated everything up, and left it to simmer. Tasted it again, and it seems pretty good. I'll probably have a bowl of it with some grated cheese for supper actually.
Later on, after I do the stuff I actually want to do around here, like take down my Christmas tree, I will try to figure out how to get pictures to display properly inside the blog entry. December 19 Look What I Have CreatedAnd by God, is it ever good. Of course, I'll be eating it for weeks, there being so much of it.
Back to the chick flick marathon. What to watch next??? |
